HYDERABAD:  OF all the books displayed at the stalls set up at LB Stadium, the main venue of the World Telugu Conference (WTC), Telugu Prathyeka Sanchika, published by the Telugu Akademi on the importance of Telangana dialect was a special attraction. Many Telugu literature lovers not only showed enthusiasm to have a glance at the special publication, but also purchase it in order to know the evolution of the dialect of the land. The publication explains how the dialect changes in every district of TS.

Paalana Bhashaga Telugu, Pracheena Kavyalu, Telangana lo Telugu Katha Sahitya Vikasam are some of the aspects that are covered in this publication, which attracted the bookworms. Praja Kavi Kaloji Narayana Rao’s books, writings of Chalam and Kanyasulkam, the Telugu play written by Gurazada Apparao in 1892, which is the first Telugu play to deal with social issues, were also on display.

Children’s books, international publications translated into Telugu, monographs of significant personalities from Telangana were a major attraction at the books stalls. Around 20 different publishing houses, including Telugu Akademi, the National Book Trust and several others sold books on rich Telugu literature.

Besides this, a collection on the various professions like Chepala Pempakam, Mekala Pempakam, Gorrela Pempakam were also on the racks. It seems these books were written in tune with the State government’s recent initiative of introducing various novel welfare schemes for the well-being of the weaker sections of people, who make their living by practising these professions.

MV Phani Kumar, who works as the assistant librarian at an Engineering college in the city made a purchase worth `12,000 at the book stall on Saturday. “One can find Telugu Vaari Charithra easily. Several others like the History of Telangana are also available only here,” he said. However, he was disappointed because the old books re-printed and released by the Telangana Resources Centre are still not available for general public.

While appreciating arrangements for the World Telugu Conference, the members of the BJP on Saturday stated that the Telangana government should also speed up the process of setting up the new campus for the Potti Sriramulu Telugu University. The University, currently located at Nampally, is one of the four venues for the four-day conference. They said that the government is doing little for the progress of the weaker sections and delay in setting up this University stands as an example.
