HYDERABAD: Huge clouds of dark smoke emanated from Indira Park on Lower Tank Bund road, taking everyone by shock on Sunday. Wooden logs, branches and dried leaves which got piled up in huge quantities for the last several months, apparently caught fire engulfing the park with billowing smoke for a few hours.

In the process, some trees near the site also caught fire and were gutted. Seeing the billowing smoke emanating from the parks, visitors rushed outside the park for safety.

It is believed that some miscreants played mischief and ignited the dried firewood and escaped from the place. However, officials of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), urban biodiversity director, V Damodar told Express that the fire was accidental and ruled out any hand of miscreants.

He said that the incident took place at around 11.30 am. Immediately after knowledge of the incident, the staff rushed to the spot, cordoned the area and brought the fire under control.

Large quantities of dried wood, branches and leaves got accumulated in the park leading to fire as the GHMC authorities had not transported the waste to the dumping yard from time to time.
