HYDERABAD: A 28-year-old youth from Warangal allegedly lost sensation in his legs after undergoing a surgery at Yashoda Hospital here. The case, one may recall, is similar to that of Nikhil Reddy, where he struggled to walk after a height-increasing surgery went wrong.

However, the doctor, who performed the surgery, said that he would be able to walk after three months.
Annabathula Nataraju from Warangal consulted Dr Kiran of Yashoda Hospital after he had pain in his right leg. The doctor suggested surgery.

‘‘The doctor said that the disc in Nataraju’s spine has slipped and a surgery has to be performed. We consulted two other doctors in the hospital for their opinion and they too suggested the same. A surgery was performed on my brother at around 4 pm on December 31. After that, he lost the sensation in his legs from hip to toe. An MRI scan was performed and the doctor said that Nataraju had to be operated upon once again as there was a clot,”  A Nagaraj, the patient’s elder brother, said.

After the second surgery, Nataraju could sense movements up to the knee. “Dr Kiran said it would take three months for him to recover and said that he would not be able to walk properly even after that. Before the surgery, the doctor said that Nataraju would be discharged in 48 hours after surgery,” Nagaraj alleged, adding that his brother was to get married in March.

However, Dr Kiran, who performed the surgery, said: “Now he is able to fell the sensation till his toe and is able to flicker his toe. He is undergoing physiotherapy. He is able to walk and stand with support but it will take three months for him to recover fully,” Dr  Kiran said. “We performed the surgery and put a surgical drain to avert clots. But, unfortunately, he developed a clot.  I took the help of a neurosurgeon for the second surgery,” he explained.
