HYDERABAD: Calvin Mascarenhas gets an incoming call on his mobile phone. The caller is an ace Tollywood director. The conversation between them lasts seven minutes and 19 seconds. The next call between them is at 11.10 pm on November 1. This time the conversation lasts about 12 minutes. The third call was on November 18 and fourth on November 19. The fifth and final call took place on January 23 2017.
In all these calls made from the Director’s phone (as per the Call Data Records (CDR) of Calvin’s phone and those of Tollywood personalities) the conversations lasted for a fairly long time. Over the last few months, the calls had stopped (or were taking place from different numbers) and the “deals” were being finalised over Whatsapp using coded language
This, in short, was how the ace Tollywood director, a three-time Nandi award recipient, was in touch with Mascarenhas, the drug peddler recently arrested by the Telangana Excise department. The director is among the 12 Telugu film personalities to whom sleuths have issued notices asking them to come in for questioning between July 19 to July 27. How the director explains his “friendship” with Calvin remains to be seen.
Top sources in the Telangana state police disclosed to Express that the sleuths have so far obtained CDRs of 25 Tollywood personalities and are sifting through their call records. The state intelligence wing too is assisting the excise officials in their investigation. They will have to be ready with all evidence by July 19 so that they can confront the stars and seek answers.
Interestingly, among the CDRs available with the investigators, one actress, who has worked with Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, and is a close companion of ace director (their relationship is well known in Tollywood circles), neither called Calvin nor received calls from him. Sources say she only Whatsapped Calvin or was getting her supply of drugs through the director himself. “All those who do LSD use it and also sell it to friends and contacts. That is how it works with LSD and even Calvin has admitted it,’’ sources said.
The sleuths sifting through CDRs have come across coded WhatsApp messages between users and accused. Words like ‘Zen’, ‘Shiva’ and ‘sunshine’ have mostly been used in WhatsApp chats between Tollywood personalities and accused as euphemisms for drugs. “Need five Shiva’’ reads one such message.
“LSD users believe they can never be caught and Calvin told us the same. He told us that within the LSD cult, it is always believed that users can never be caught and that is why he went about with his business with ease,” they said.
