HYDERABAD: Two people were killed and three others injured after a drunken driver rammed his car into a metro rail pillar, which was in the middle of a road, in Hyderabad.

The incident occurred at Chaitanyapuri, late on Wednesday night.

One of the injured is in a critical condition, police said.

Sub-inspector Jayaram said Sai Kumar Goud (24), who was driving the car when the incident happened, had taken some of his friends to a bar to celebrate his birthday.

After partying in the bar, they were on their way to Nampally to have supper when the incident happened.

Sai Kumar's friends Chaithanya, Srinath, Chandra Reddy, Krishna Prasanna and Chakrapani, were in the car

The sub-inspector said, "As soon as the car crossed Saroornagar, it hit a metro pillar. The car also ran over a homeless man, identified as Ganesh, who was sleeping below the pillar."

They were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. However, Srinath died while undergoing treatment.

Chakrapani is in a critical condition.

Bodies of the two killed -- Ganesh and Srinath -- have been sent to Osmania General Hospital for autopsy.

"Driver Sai was heavily drunk. Breathe analyser test resulted positive. He is in our custody and questioning is on," Jayaram said.

This is fourth incident of an overspeeding vehicle crashing into a metro rail pillar in Hyderabad. A month ago, Andhra Pradesh minister P Narayana's son P Nishit was killed when his speeding car rammed a metro rail pillar.
