Dug up roads make life hell

HYDERABAD: Vivekananda Nagar Colony has grown manifold in the past few years with many real estate projects coming up in the area but same is not the case with drainage pipelines which choke up regularly. Residents allege that although several foundation stones have been laid in the area to lay drainage pipelines, nothing much has changed on the ground.

Srinivas Reddy of Eenadu colony in the ward says, “The drains get choked up regularly and sewage water overflows onto the main roads, especially in the monsoon. There is a severe requiremnt of laying drainage pipes with larger circumference to accommodate the additional flows from households.”
Incomplete civic works is also a major problem that bogs the residents of this ward. One example is of Chaitanya Nagar, home to many clothing stores where cloth merchants from Maharashtra conduct business.

Drainage pipelines were laid in the area about two months ago but the dug up roads have been left without being covered with a concrete or a BT road. Vinay Kumar, one of the cloth merchants said, “Since two months we are suffering due to the pathetic condition of the road here. Cloth merchants regularly order stocks of cloths and the vehicles carrying them have a hard time entering and exiting the area. We have repeatedly complained to the local political leaders and also to our corporator but nothing has been done till now.”

When contacted, the corporator, M Laxmi Bai said that the delay in repair work of the dug up road has been due to the monsoon rains because of which works could not be conducted. “The contractors along with the work on this road were conducting other works simultaneously because of which they did not conduct this work on time.” “This is just not one issue. Since I got elected as corporator, close to `5.5 crores have been spent on various developmental projects in the ward,” she added.

Garbage dumping, another problem
In Venkateshwara Nagar, a slum in the ward residents often face problem due to dumping of garbage in public areas. At Sumitra Nagar, the story is no different where unsanitary conditions prevail. Residents of the area complain that sanitation workers of GHMC do not sweep the area regularly.  “The garbage is not removed for days. Foul smell emanates from it and we fear it might spread of diseases,” said a tailor shop owner.  In Rickshaw Pullers colony, many residents are waiting for pukka roads to be laid besides owning a two bedroom flat promised by the  govt, said M Ranga Rao, former corporator of the ward.
