HYDERABAD: Two women construction workers were killed when the embankment collapsed upon them at a work site opposite the Tata Consultancy Services office in Madhapur Monday morning. Their husbands survived with minor injuries.

The women were identified as Kishtamma (45) from Sangareddy district, Bharatamma (25) from Nizamabad.

Eye-witnesses said an entire wall of earth caved in at about 9.40 am, burying the women under 10 ft of soil.. “The men started screaming, but there was no way we could pull them in time although there was an excavator at the site," said a construction worker.

The bodies were taken to Osmania General Hospital for a post-mortem procedure.  The Madhapur Police said cases would be filed against the builder and the contractor.

Telangana Labour Department officials said ex gratia payments of up to Rs 8 lakh (Rs 2 lakh from the Hyderabad municipality and Rs 6 lakh from the Labour Department ) would be given to the bereaved families. If the women had labour cards, the Rs 6 lakh would be given immediately, or else a proposal would be filed for issuance of labour cards.
