HYDERABAD: Organ and tissue donations of brain dead patients are on the rise in Telangana. The state government’s Jeevandan Cadaver Transplantation programme, for the first three months of 2017, has crossed 100 donations. 


In the last three days alone, families of two individuals who were declared brain dead by doctors concerned have donated as many as 11 organs.Two livers, two cornea, heart and the liver of 47-year-old V Lalitha from Begumpet were donated after her  husband and two daughters consented.


According to information released by the Health, Medical and Family Welfare Department, a total of 1297 organs and tissues have been donated to the programme since 2013, with the highest number donated in 2016 being 411. Health minister Laxma Reddy said in the Assembly that cadaver organ donations and transplantation were on the rise.


From 2013 till date 1,297 organs and tissues were given under Jeevandan scheme. They include kidney (539), liver (302), heart (34), corneas (243), heart valves (166), lungs (6) and pancreas (7). Reddy said that organ donatio facilities would be set up in the districts as well.
