HYDERABAD: The cramped living conditions for children admitted to Shishu Vihar at Yousufguda in city are set to change for the better as steps are being taken to shift about 100 inmates to a new building meant for office space.

This newspaper highlighted in its columns about 10 days ago the inhuman conditions at Shishu Vihar where groups of 20 to 30 children are tightly packed into each room. In view of the renovation work taken up at the premises, 210 children below 6 years were moved out of the building to Children’s Home located on same premises.

According to a detailed account given by a source, the situation is that about a dozen children sleep on the ground in one row with one piling up on another. If anyone wants to take rest, he has to find space between rows.

Officials of the state women and child welfare department said on Thursday that arrangements were being made to shift 90 to 100 children aged between three and six years to regional deputy director’s office building, a few metres away from  Shishu Vihar. The shifting will make room for the remaining children and ease congestion.

This is an interim arrangement till renovation at Shishu Vihar building is complete. Earlier, it was estimated that it would take 3-4 months but it would take shorter time, said Viziendira Boyi, director of women and child welfare.
