GHMC draws plans for restoration of urban lakes

HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will soon submit proposals on restoration and comprehensive development of as many as 20 lakes in the city. In view of the state government’s plan of having at least one lake in each of the 24 Assembly Constituencies in GHMC, the authorities have selected 20 lakes as of now. The remaining four lakes are yet to be selected.

The GHMC Standing Committee has approved the proposals on Thursday and the same would now be posed to the GHMC general body approval. Later, the proposal would be sent to the state government for obtaining administrative sanction of `402 crore.

Minister for irrigation T Harish Rao and Minister for  Municipal Administration and Urban Development KT Rama Rao had a few days ago said that Mission Kakatiya needs to be implemented even in urban areas with a different perspective and under a different name - ‘Restoration and Comprehensive Development of Urban Lakes’.

This would involve identifying at least one lake in each Constituency, preferably lakes having good buffer potential.
