Yet another maternal death at government hospital

Anita died about 10 hours after C-section surgery; family allege negligence.

HYDERABAD: In yet another case of maternal mortality, a 28-year-old woman from Hyderabad died about nine-and-half hours after she underwent a caesarean delivery at Modern Government Maternity Hospital at Petlaburj on Tuesday night. While S Anitha’s husband alleged that she died of negligence, superintendent of the hospital Dr S Nagamani said the woman suffered from Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH) and had a heart attack.

It was first pregnancy for Anita, a resident of Langerhouz. She was admitted in the hospital on Monday morning. Doctors performed caesarean section on her at around 12 noon on Tuesday and a baby girl was born.  “Her condition was good till evening.  There were no complications with C-Section surgery and she did not suffer from heavy bleeding,” Dr Nagamani said.  However, no internal inquiry has been ordered into her death.

Anita’s husband S Santosh,  a  daily-wage labourer,  said he received a call around 9.10 pm informing that his wife’s condition turned serious. “When we went to the hospital, she was dead,” Santosh said waiting at Osmania General Hospital’s mortuary where her postmortem was conducted.  Anita used to work as a helper at a supermarket. In the complaint lodged with Charminar Police, Santosh alleged that his wife died due to negligence of doctors. A case has been filed. At least 12 maternal deaths have been reported this year in city’s Niloufer, Petlaburj and Sultanbaazar hospitals.
