HYDERABAD: For the thousands of residents and commuters who visit Ameerpet, finding a garbage bin is as difficult as finding a public toilet— both of which is the need of the hour. The open garbage dumping that is found on every other street is a harsh reality of the city’s most urban space. Thanks to the ever-increasing hostels, the onus for open dumping which is around the clock activity by the residents lies with the municipal corporation. The failure of which increased the spread of vector-borne diseases, the ward members also deal with the strong stench that emanates from the garbage decomposing.

At the wards two biggest lung spaces, the BK Guda park and the GHMC park are bogged down by open dumping. Adding to it, the lack of toilets at accessible distances had made these parks to be open toilets for passersby. “Everyone dumps garbage here and so am I doing this, the GHMC trucks, though it visits our lanes does not collect waste from every house,” said a local resident.

At Maitrivanam, near Sonabali Ellamma temple, a huge pile of cables is left on the road restricting the entry into the colony. “Is it not the work of the GHMC workers to remove the cables from the road. Why should I spend `200 from my pocket? The workers only on bribing they turn up,” said Nagaraj, a resident.
When contacted, N Seshu Kumari, corporator of Ameerpet ward agreed that the ward is troubled due to open garbage dumping. She said, “The biggest problem in the ward is open dumping and it is because of the 3,000 odd hostels that have mushroomed in the ward which caused a steep increase in the garbage produced.”

The GHMC trucks are not sufficient for the amount of garbage produced and all of them return to the dump yard after their trucks are full leaving many homes unattended, she added.

Overflowing sewage in several colonies
A majority of the drainage pipelines in the ward lie open for the major part of the day as desilting is a common phenomenon in the ward in spite of new UGD pipelines installed. At Shyam Karan Road, S R Nagar, Bapuji Nagar and Maitrivanam crossroads, the overflowing of sewage is a common ordeal that the numerous visitors face on a day-to-day basis.
