Appoint women drivers, helpers in school buses: Maneka Gandhi

HYDERABAD: Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi today suggested appointing women drivers and helpers in school buses as a way to prevent any attacks on children by the bus personnel.

Gandhi made the suggestion during a meeting with Telangana women and child welfare department officials here, according to an official release.

She made the suggestion in the wake of an attack and killing of a student of a private school by a bus helper in New Delhi recently, it said.

Gandhi suggested that women drivers and helpers can be appointed in school buses to prevent such incidents, it said.

The Union Minister also assured the state government that the Centre would provide funds for the training of women drivers and bus helpers, the release said.

She discussed a number of issues concerning women and child welfare in Telangana, it added.
