HYDERABAD:If you always wanted to be a spy and conduct covert operations to expose people involved in illegal activities and get paid for it, here is your chance. People who will be part of decoy operations to expose diagnostic centres which conduct sex determination tests will now be rewarded with money and they will be trained in using spy gear like secret cameras. According to Section-6 of Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostics Techniques Act 1994, determination of sex of foetus is prohibited.

There are over 1,115 diagnostic centres that are under scanner in Hyderabad. The reward money depends on the rate of success of the operation or the results the information produces. Top officials said that in states such as Gujarat and Haryana, the rewards range between Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000. However, the reward money, to be given under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme, has not been decided yet in Hyderabad.

A pregnant woman took part in one such decoy operation in the city and officials are closely guarding her identity. Hyderabad district collector Dr Yogita Rana told Express that identity of all such spies will be kept hidden. In a decoy operation conducted on Tuesday by East Zone Task Force along with Health Department officials, it was found that Sujatha Scanning Centre in Yousufguda performed sex determination test.

Two workers from Jyothi Reproductive Health Care Centre were found to be taking patients, who seek the tests, to Sujatha Scanning Centre. Both the centres were sealed and action would be taken against doctors and workers involved, officials said. They gathered evidence against Dr Gandhi who owns Sujatha Scanning Centre. In-charge DMHO Dr IA Sarala said that he used portable diagnostic devices for the tests, which are banned.

Diagnostic labs with expired license to be shut

The diagnostics centres in city which have not renewed their licences issued by health department will be shut down, said Hyderabad district collector Yogita Rana. At a review meeting held on Thursday, the collector directed health officials to issue notices to such centres.
