HYDERABAD: Historically, the emphasis of family planning has been largely on contraceptive methods for women and there has been little effort to involve men, Dr Sheela V Mane of KC General Hospital has said. She was delivering a talk on ‘Repositioning of family planning in India’ at World Congress on Reproductive Health, which was organised by Maternal Health and Research Trust and coincided with the 28th annual meeting of Indian Society for the Study of Reproduction and Fertility.

As per the National Family Health Survey-3 (2005-06), among married couples the percentage of women who opted for sterilisation is 37 and the male sterilisation is a mere 1 per cent. “Family planning programmes and communication strategies need to be redesigned to encourage men to accept vasectomy as a family planning method,” said Dr Mane
