HYDERABAD: After the completion of the pavement-laying phase of the Charminar Pedestrianisation Project (CPP) around the Charminar vicinity, GHMC officials are now readying themselves to take up other beautification projects which they claim would increase customers in the bazaars.

Till now, the pedestrianisation project, though has beautified the monument and its immediate surroundings, has also cut short the businesses of the majority of the shopkeepers in the vicinity.

However, on Monday, GHMC Additional Commissioner and special officer for CPP, Musharraf Faruqui, assured that the beautification of Laad Bazaar and Pathargatti would increase customers. This is how he claims it would work: Firstly, GHMC plans to develop the facade of the buildings in Laad Bazar and install heritage lights in them, as reportedly inspired by a marketplace in Amritsar.

The alignment of the shops in the area is also to be checked under the project. “Many shops in the Laad Bazaar area are not uniform in their alignment. The shops have even taken over the roads in many cases. We will clear those and make them aesthetically pleasing,” said Faruqui.

“Apart from this, uniform signage will be taken up and benches would be installed in the middle of the Laad Bazaar road,” he added. “We promise that after the development of the area, we will be able to bring more customers to the shop.”

The GHMC will also “clean up” the Pathargatti area and the existing signboards that have faded through the years will be restored.
