HYDERABAD: It’s not often that we see cancer patients surviving the deadly disease and emerging bravely as strong citizens to help those who are suffering the same affliction. But 62-year-old educationist Geetha Ramasubramanian, from Hyderabad is quite an exceptional lady. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer the last year and was operated as well, but the process of chemotherapy wasn’t that easy.

Her spirits were breaking had it not been for her husband Kannan, who stood sturdy by her side till she regained her health. Geetha narrates this harrowing experience of hers and how the same was eased by people around her in a book titled ‘To Rise Above the Crab’ in which she writes: “Cancer is invasive and painful condition. It needs a superhuman strength, mentally and physically to successfully face the side-effects of the chemotherapy and radiation. More than the efforts of the patients, it’s the care, love and patience of the attendants that is of utmost importance to accelerate the process of healing in a cancer survivor.” [sic]

She pens her experience(s) in a smooth narrative even providing food intake guidance for patients undergoing chemotherapy. Other than that she lists case studies of other survivors, too, who have suffered. Geetha mentions some symptoms before the onset of the malady. She ignored the signs of extreme fatigue, loss of appetite, swollen belly and eyes, gradual inability to even swallow water, which resulted in the aggravation of the disease.

She shares, “Had the doctors, nurses and staff at at Soumya Multispeciality Hospital, Secunderabad not been supportive in keeping my tempo high, I’d not survive the disaster.” But she did survive, is living a healthy life and wants to help other cancer patients through her book. Unfortunately, the book of 32 pages isn’t available in any store or web-portal. Once can directly collect it from her for free.
