HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad metro rail in association with Zoomcar launched 25 electric vehicles at the Miyapur metro rail station on Friday.

The facility will be made available along the metro corridor where power grid is setting up charging stations for these vehicles. The electric vehicle facility will be extended to the airport and other localities in the city in due course of time.

These vehicles can be booked on a rental basis by submitting a driver's license through an app and will cost Rs 40 per hour.

The cars, which can also be rented for Rs 10,000 per month, can be dropped off at the stations when not in use. "A part for the rental cost can be recovered when the car gets rented out further,"  Surender Reddy, the CEO of Zoomcar said.

The car which are designed to operate on a lithium ion battery will take about one-and a-half hours to charge.

Speaking with the mediapersons at the launch, NVS Reddy, managing director of the Hyderabad metro rail, said that the facility will help IT employees the most as it will help and improve the last mile connectivity at the metro stations.

"Hyderabad has become the first city in the country to have this facility. We do not want our city to turn into a gas chamber like Delhi. If we can improve shared mobility we can have fewer cars on the road," Reddy said.
