Dr Ushalakshmi’s Pink Ribbon Tournament 2018- Women Sports Pride, organised by Oro Sports Village and Dr Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation, was held in Oro Sports village in Shankerpally as part of the ongoing Breast Cancer awareness month. The New Indian Express was the media partner for the third edition of the tournament which aims to spread a healthy lifestyle among young women.

The women both sportspersons and housewives alike from over 48 teams partook in tournaments held for 4 major sporting events- Volleyball, Basketball, Throwball and Football.

Speaking about the importance of early detection, Dr Raghu Ram who opened the Dr Ushalakshmi Foundation in 2007 in memory of his mother, said that such an event was only to attract the women through sports and encourage them in a discussion on the disease.

“Breast cancer is the most common kind of cancer in India and so we want to ensure women get themselves checked often. Incorporating the theme with sports is to encourage the idea of a healthy lifestyle to avoid lifestyle disorder,” said Dr Raghu Ram.

“Schools are becoming education factories and often after 15 years of age, sports is discouraged, especially for girls and so the motto of this event is to provide a platform to attract women back into the game and ensure a healthy lifestyle,” said Anand Mallipudi, CEO and founder of Oro Sports where the event was held.

Women from various schools, colleges and sports institutions were part of the event with at least 10 teams fighting it out in each sport. “Sports changed my life in many ways because before this I had a very lazy and lethargic way of life. But two years ago I have introduced Basketball and I have become a more conscious person about my lifestyle,” said Sudheshna Reddy, a basketball player from St Francis College.

Organised as part of the breast cancer awareness month, the tournament saw a 5k run where women, children and men from different walks of life took part.
