Empowering schoolgirls: Phase II from Wednesdday

SSA along with ‘Mahila Samakhya’ and IT@School will launch the second phase

Against the backdrop of rising atrocities against girls students, the SSA along with ‘Mahila Samakhya’ and IT @School will launch the second phase of the intervention programme on Wednesday.

“The programme aims at empowering girls of classes I to VIII to handle physical and mental challenges. Online training classes would be imparted to the teachers. We have already set up help-desks at all the government schools. The students can write down their problems and drop it in the box. Further, karate and martial arts classes are being imparted to girls,” said K M Ramanandan, SSA project director.

The project involves conducting interactive sessions in which the help-desk coordinators would discuss the issues that the students disclose to the Mahila Samakhya members, doctors, academicians, child-line coordinators and legal experts.

“Four episodes would be recorded on Wednesday at the Thiruvananthapuram studio. The district help-desk coordinator and SSA programme officers would interact through the respective satellite interaction terminal of IT@School. A range of questions on various issues being faced by girls would be discussed.

The first two episodes would focus on family life and education. The third session would discuss the behavioural changes noticed in students and the fourth episode would be based on the challenges being faced by them,” said SSA programme officer U K Shyamala.

The recorded teleconferencing would be telecast on Victers Channel of IT@School for the aid of parents and teachers, in a fortnight’s time. The programme would have been more effective had it been launched at the beginning of the academic year, experts feel.
