'Confidence, Not Colour, Matters'

KOCHI:For the girls at St Teresa’s College, “CHROMA 2015: Colour Me Equal” programme was a step into reality from the world of fantasy created by national as well as multinational cosmetics companies. The programme organised by Department of Communicative English at the College Auditorium on Tuesday unfolded the stereotypes connected with fair skin and the hollow campaigns orchestrated by media regarding fair being the mantra for beauty and success.

Inaugurating the programme, College principal Sister Vinitha, highlighted that it’s not the colour of skin which matters but a good heart. “The colour that God has given us is far better than the one we gain through artificial means. There is no point in lamenting over being dusky. In order to gain success fair skin is not needed, you have to show confidence in yourself,” said Sister Vinitha.

Kavitha Emmanuel, founder and director of Women of Worth (WOW), who delivered the key note address said that majority of women fail to understand how special they are and run after meaningless advertisements.

“A major chunk of population is obsessed with their looks. In short we have forgotten who we truly are and try to emote others. The wrong perception rooted in the society is that a person’s status, his worthiness and other traits are predicted by one’s look. The pressure for being fair is not limited to women, men too run after this,” said Kavitha Emmanuel.

Psychiatrist C J John called upon the girls to develop inner resistance to cope with the pressure exerted by media via advertisements.
