Rap has Always Been his Love

KOCHI: Sanju Jaison first listened to rap when he was in school. It quickly got  onto him and next he was digging deep to the genre searching for raps from  the 80s. Soon, he was making his own songs and ‘performing’ before his friends and family who gave him the thumbs up.Today, this UAE-based rapper who goes by the name San Jaimt is charting a path to realising his dreams and he has already rapped in a few Malayalam movies.

Rap Album for V-Day

‘Neeyane’, his rap song, that was released on Valentine’s Day, is already a  hit online and Sanju, who hails from Kottayam,  says his aim was to create a liking for people in Kerala for rap.

“Neeyane’ is a rap song and a tribute to love. I believe there is great  potential for rap music in Kerala and ‘Neeyane’ is a venture in this direction. To keep up with the taste of Malayalis who are more inclined to melodies, I have brought in that element too,” says Sanju who raps in English.

‘Neeyane’ has been penned by Girish Chandran and Harish. Vocals are by Harish and Rathish, with Sanju providing the rap. The video shot in Kochi is directed by Girish Chandran and has Nitya playing the lead.

Sanju debut single  ‘We’re Sorry’ about atrocities faced by women released  in 2013 had met with success with it also being featured in major music channels.

Movie stint

Sanju is the one who rapped for theme song in movies like ‘Mr Fraud’, ‘ABCD’, and ‘Koothara’. Though his journey to  music began with his brief association with music director Alphonse Joseph,  it was composer Gopi Sunder who gave his a chance to rap in Dulquer Salman-starrer ABCD. “Then the theme song in ‘Mr Fraud happened,” says Sanju.

Today, Sanju is engaged in creating beats for different genres and has found favour in the online beat market, with already developing it to a parallel part-time career.

Sanju, whose favourite is Eminem, will perform in Krakow, Poland, for World  Youth day with bands from around the world. He will also be part of Dubai based band ‘Masterplan’ at Krakow.
