Another Mass Fish-kill in Periyar

KOCHI: The Periyar witnessed yet another mass fish-kill in the Eloor area on Sunday, and local residents reported discolouration of the river after shutters of the Pathalam regulator were opened in the morning.

According to the residents, the water turned thick black and dead fish were seen floating in large numbers near Vettukadavu, two km downstream the Pathalam regulator, around 2 pm.

People thronged the banks of the river in large numbers after the news of fish-kill spread. The affected fish mainly comprised prawns and pearl-spots.The matter was informed to the the Kerala State Pollution Control Board, and the officials collected samples from the river.In December last year, two incidents of mass fish-kill were reported in the Muttar river, a tributary of the Periyar, on the Eloor-Edayar stretch.
