Medical college students urge government to name cath lab after Shamna

The students of Government Medical College, Kochi, have urged the government to name the cath lab after Shamna.

KOCHI: The students of Government Medical College, Kochi, have urged the government to name the building identified for the proposed cath lab after Shamna Tasneem, a second year MBBS student there, who died last week after being administered an injection at the Medical College. Shamna died allegedly as a result of medical negligence.

And it was during a commemorative meeting held at the Medical College that the students made the request. The students, including house surgeons put forward three suggestions-- name the building after Shamna, a decent compensation for the bereaved family and government job for Shamna’s kin.

‘’ We want the new block to be named after her. We made  an oral request in this regard before the Medical College principal at the commemorative meeting. A formal memorandum including these demands will be submitted to the  Secretary, Health on Tuesday,’’ said an office-bearer of house surgeons’ association.

Detailed report prepared

Joint Director of Medical Education Dr K Sreekumari, who visited the hospital on Monday, spoke to the students and  house surgeons, who were on duty at the ward when Shamna’s condition worsened. The JDME visited the hospital to prepare a detailed report on the circumstances which led to the death of the student.

Meanwhile, Kalamassery Police, who registered a case on a petition filed by the father of the deceased, are  yet to receive Shamna’s autopsy report  from Alappuzha Medical College. ‘’ It is learnt that Alapuzha Medical College authorities are awaiting the results of certain tests. We hope to receive the postmortem report  without delay once the Medical College obtains it,’’  officials said.
