Dalits, adivasis demand hostel facility

Dalit and adivasi organisations in the state will take out a march on Monday, demanding conversion of the building housing the Adivasi Heritage Museum into hostel/training institute for adivasi students.

KOCHI: Dalit and adivasi organisations in the state will take out a march on Monday, demanding conversion of the building housing the Adivasi Heritage Museum into hostel/training institute for adivasi students.

The march will be taken out from High Court Junction to the museum on Foreshore Road here at 10 am on Monday.

According to the organisers, at least three students in the Ernakulam district discontinued their studies due to lack of hostel facility. They resumed their studies following intervention of the State Human Rights Commission.

“The Scheduled Tribes Development Department has not set up hostel for adivasi students anywhere in the state.

The hostels built by the Scheduled Castes Development Department in Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode long ago have only a few seats for adivasi students,” said Bhoo Adhikara Samrakshana Samithi convener M Geethanandan.
