BPCL refinery mishap claims another life

Officials said the duo was reportedly working on high power cables and were hurt in a shock-wave created by a short-circuit.

KOCHI: K D Velayudhan (53), one of the two contract workers injured in an ‘electric fire’ at the substation of a captive power plant in the Kochi Refinery Complex of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) on January 10, passed away on Thursday morning.

Hailing from Korakuzhy, Chethikode, Ernakulam, Valayudhan had sustained around 90 percent burns in the mishap and was being treated in the Burn ICU of Ernakulam Medical Centre hospital, said hospital authorities. He passed away at 5.50am.

Contractual workers under a private firm engaged in electrical works at the refinery, Velayudhan and Arun (34) of Palaprayil, Vadayambadi, Puthencruz, had suffered severe burns in the mishap and were admitted to a private hospital in the city. Arun succumbed to injuries in a city hospital that night itself, while Velayudhan’s condition remained critical. Officials said the duo was reportedly working on high power cables and were hurt in a shock-wave created by a short-circuit.

Meanwhile, the District Administration has sought a report from Factories and Boilers Department on the mishap, while BPCL has already initiated an internal inquiry into the incident.
