KOCHI: The Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority (KSLMA) on Friday started a survey of migrant labourers in the Perumbavoor area, as part of an initiative to educate the illiterate among interstate migrants and to integrate them into the Kerala society.


The project was inaugurated by Ports Minister Kadannappally Ramachandran at Vallam Kochangadi Junction, Perumbavoor.


“This revolutionary project will be a model for the rest of the country, and help improve the rapport between migrant labourers and local residents,” said the minister.


The survey will be carried out by students of Marampally MES College, covering all the wards of the municipality. The basic knowledge of labourers, their educational standard and Hindi/Malayalam literacy will be recorded to identify prospective students. The selected students will be imparted lessons in Malayalam and Hindi for six months. Awareness programmes, youth festival and literacy test are part of the project.


Digital learning material will also be used for the drive “We are hopeful of commencing classes by next month. A decision on the class timing will be taken after analysing the data. Soon, the project will be extended to all local bodies in the state,” said an officer.


Perumbavoor municipal chairperson Sathi Jayakrishnan presided over the meeting, which was attended by Eldhose Kunnappilly MLA and   Literacy Mission director P S Sreekala.
