Stranded fishermen rescued

Around 49 fishermen stranded at sea, after the engine of their boat developed a technical snag, were rescued by Marine Enforcement Wing of the Fisheries Department.

KOCHI: Around 49 fishermen stranded at sea, after the engine of their boat developed a technical snag, were rescued by Marine Enforcement Wing of the Fisheries Department, on Monday. 

A team from Vypeen Fisheries Station carried out the rescue operation and safely shifted the fishermen to Kochi. The boat ‘Thirukudumbam’, owned by Sudheer of Thiruvambady, Alappuzha, was stranded around 20 nautical miles off Cherthala coast.

“The rescue operation began  following an alert from the distressed boat around noon. Our team found the location and reached there within a few hours. “The fishermen were shifted to another boat and brought to the coast. The boat was towed to Vypeen by night,” an officer said.The operation was led by Fisheries assistant director S Rajeev, Enforcement officers Binoy and Jayesh and sea guards Vinu and Rajeevan.
