An engrossing take on entrepreneurship

The book ‘Reflections In Tranquility’ is a read for the management enthusiast

KOCHI: Management consultant P Jayaraman’s book Reflections In Tranquility is a useful read for emerging entrepreneurs and youngsters who want to ‘startup’. The book is divided into four parts - personalities, places, books and experience. In its forward, Accounting firm Varma and Varma’s Senior Managing partner Venugopal C Govind describes the book as an “exciting read with lucid narrative and reviews - such as those on the lives of successful people; on places of historic and cultural importance; on interesting books that are enlightening; and on events and experiences in daily life that are of lasting significance.”

The profile of seven eminent personalities are listed in the opening section of the book. It starts with the Milk Man of India, Dr Varghese Kurian. His life-story is given in detail in a simple way. The others featured in the section are, N S Ramaswamy, Metro Man E Sreedharan, Kochouseph Chittilappilly, GPC Nair, Mathew Anthraper and N B Majnu. The personal traits of all these entrepreneurs are explained in these chapters which makes it a worthwhile read.
The second section, Places, covers the author’s impressions about the tourist spots he visited from 2009. It is a narration of seven places - Bali Island, Kyoto and Tokyo, Siem Reap, Istanbul, Madrid and Barcelona, Lisbon and Munich. To make these chapters attractive, the author had done a background research and sprinkled historic importance about these places. He also moved ahead by providing details about reference books about these places.
The third section, Books, deals with famous titles of varied subjects. These chapters provide the significance of these books and contains a brief review as well. The final section, Experiences is pure Management ‘gyan’ which is the area of expertise of the author. Before the book concludes he also provides over hundred quotes of famous personalities in history. This is a ready reckoner for common readers.
P Jayaraman started his career in 1965 at the Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Limited (FACT). After two decades of service in FACT, he worked as a project leader and national co-ordinator of a World Bank funded agricultural project in Nigeria. On his return in 1995, Jayaraman joined Kerala Horticultural Development project as its marketing specialist.
It is an ideal book for management students, teachers, consultants and those who want to have a reference book on entrepreneurship and management.
