Brimming with freshness

Playback singer Jyotsna talks about Thediye Poren, her latest Tamil single composed by Hari Dafusia

KOCHI:It’s about getting reconnected with your past, an urban girl searching for her roots. And, it comes in a coarse sonic texture, punctuated with not-so-jarring psychedelic notes. Thediye Poren, Jyotsna’s latest Tamil single composed by Hari Dafusia, is quite an amalgam of styles and genres, a track brimming with freshness. “It’s basically electronic folk and the rendition is totally unpolished,” says the singer.

It all started when she got a message from her old schoolfriend Hari, now a Canada-based musician. “He was my junior at school who used to play keyboard for our music programmes. After school we lost touch and one day I got a facebook message from him. It was totally out of the blue and then we started working on the song. The original of the song is in Japanese and he sent me the Tamil version,” says Jyotsna.
The lyrics of Thediye Poren are not very poetic, rather it has the strong flavour of colloquial Tamil. “It’s about self-discovery, a modern-day girl going in search of her origins. Besieged by a string of questions, she tries to find some answers. So it’s basically a philosophical take on life and the visuals are full of motifs from the nature.”

Jyotsna says as a vocalist it was her chance to experiment, to revel in a variant of music she hasn’t indulged so far. “Hari wanted something raw and rustic. The song required an earthy feel, a totally unsophisticated style of rendition,” she explains.
Though the song was released just a couple of days ago, it has garnered much appreciation from the music fraternity. “The most impressive element of the song is its musical richness. The tune is very catchy and the orchestration far from ordinary. After the first four lines, a few more layers are added to the music and the process continues till the end. It’s the kind of music that grows on you,” she says. The song features a global ensemble of musicians and the lyrics are penned by Muthamizh. “The best thing about Thediye Poren is that we hardly received any negative feedback ever since it was released. We, all the artists involved in it, are really upbeat about it,” she adds.
