Kerala cop turns angel for two kids who went missing

KOCHI: At a time when police officers often make news for wrong reasons, the timely intervention of a civil police officer has brought laurels to the force.

For civil police officer P P Binu, it was a routine assignment when he was entrusted to conduct inspection at a children’s home in Mumbai two months ago, in connection with a case related to disappearance of a Class-IX student.

During the inspection, Binu, who is attached to the Kalady police station, asked the caretaker of the children’s home to contact him if any child from Kerala was brought there.

The officer received a call from Mumbai a few days ago, with the caller providing him details of two Malayalam-speaking children lodged at the children’s home.

Subsequently, Binu alerted CIs across the state and sent photographs of the children to top police officials through WhatsApp.

Binu’s prompt response was a vital clue for Iritty DySP Prajeesh Thottathil, who is in charge of probe into the disappearance of Aryan and Amrita, who were believed to have been murdered.

Based on the information, a police team visited Mumbai and identified the children.

“Usually, police officers are blamed for even minor lapses. Officers like Binu bring accolades to the police force and set example for others,” said Kochi Range IG P Vijayan.

Binu was felicitated and presented with a cash reward of `2,500 at a meeting held at the office of the IG here the other day.
