Deathly brawls

KOCHI: It seems after the bars reopened on July 2 the number of drunken brawls has increased. The city witnessed some of the worst kinds of drunken brawls. However, it is worrying to note that many of these brawls end up with someone getting killed. In the past one month, three such murders were reported in the city.On Thursday, a 32-year-old man died after being stabbed in the neck following a drunken brawl. Eloor police arrested three persons in connection with the incident. According to the police, the altercation happened between two groups. “The incident happened on Wednesday night.

Akshay Kumar, a native of Muppathadam in Aluva, was at a bar near Eloor with another person. The duo picked up an argument with another group in the bar. As the brawl heated up, one of the accused took out a knife and stabbed Akshay in his neck,” said the cops. The accused are Renish,31, Sanish, 28, and Anilkumar, 28. All three hail from Eloor. Though Akshay was immediately rushed to a private hospital, he succumbed to injuries.

In another incident on the same day, a 32-year-old woman was bludgeoned to death by her husband at Thuruthy, near Kuruppampady. According to the cops, Shivadasan,42, murdered her wife Lekha by hitting her on the head with an iron block from a stove. “The accused doubted his wife’s fidelity,” said the cops. “Fights were a common thing in the household,” added the police officers.

Drunken brawls are a common affair among the migrants, said the cops. Towards the end of October, Neeraj Chetri alias Robin, 29, a native of Jalpaiguri, West Bengal was arrested for murdering a migrant labourer at Pottakuzhi. The police officers said Neeraj was arrested in connection with the murder of Deepakar Bajar, who worked at a meat shop. Another worker, Raju, was also taken into custody, but the police released him after it became evident that he had no involvement in the crime.

The trio used to work at the meat shop near Pottakuzhi church and was staying on the first floor of the shop. Deepakar picked up an argument with Robin while playing cards and the altercation eventually culminated in murder. Robin stabbed Deepakar in his stomach and neck. Raju, who had gone out, found Deepakar lying in a pool of blood on his return and informed the matter to the shop owner over the phone.
According to the police officers, the murders that happen following a drunken brawl are not planned. “In an inebriated condition the person picks up disputes with others which culminates in attacks, often murder,” said an officer. Police officers cited, the number of murder and homicide attempts have declined in Kochi city.
