KOCHI: The security apparatus at the district collectorate in Kakkanad here is set to be enhanced further with more CCTV cameras to be mounted there. A Collectorate officer said bids have been invited for the installation and maintenance of CCTV cameras.

“We are looking to procure 10 bullet cameras of two megapixels. Similarly, 4 TB surveillance hard disk will be procured which will have a capacity to store the CCTV footage for 30 days. A fund of around `5 lakh will be utilised for this. The cameras will be procured through e-tendering,” he said.
“The newly-installed cameras will enable day/night monitoring of the collectorate building as well as the premises,” he said.

Kakkanad had witnessed two minor blasts including one inside the collectorate building. It was in July 2009, a pipe bomb fixed with a timer attached to it went off inside the building. Nearly a decade on since the incident, those behind the blast have not been brought to justice. The case is currently being probed by the Internal Security Investigation Team (ISIT) which had interrogated several people with terror links.

Similarly, another low-intensity blast triggered by a country-made bomb took place at the Ayyappa ‘Thavalam’ (wayside halt)    near Mavelipuram in Kakkanad, barely a kilometre from the collectorate,  in  January 2014.  Luckily, no one was injured in the explosion.  Though a Special Investigation Team(SIT)  had been formed to probe the incident the perpetrators still remain at large.
