Meet to ease Seaport-Airport stretch planned

The district administration has also prepared an action plan to develop the highly-congested road into an accident-free zone.

KOCHI: In an effort to make the make the Seaport-Airport Road an accident-free zone, a meeting of all the government agencies will be held at the end of this month. District Collector K Mohammed Y Safirulla has decided to convene the meeting which will be attended by the officers from the department such as police, MVD, RBDCK, PWD, local body officials and NGOs.

The collector’s move to convene a high-level meeting was followed based on a report that appeared in the TNIE in the last month. As per the report, three deaths and 25 people were injured in 27 accidents this year alone owing to the pathetic condition of the road.

“Since the road comes under several departments, all the department’s efforts are needed to make the road into an accident-free zone. A meeting in this regard has been scheduled to be conducted by the end of this month,” said the District Collector.

The district administration has also prepared an action plan to develop the highly-congested road into an accident-free zone.

The enforcement of traffic, direction to the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala (RBDCK) to complete the maintenance, widening of the Seaport-Airport Road and the New traffic arrangements are the major decision that the district administration had decided to implement in the stretch.

Potholes, uneven surface, lack of road markings and street lights, and hazardous movement of goods carriers and other heavy vehicles are the chief causes for turning the road into a death trap.
“ Since the major works have to be done from the government side we have also a submitted a memorandum to the government for the early intervention which also includes the widening of the Seaport-Airport road. The government also has taken it seriously and a positive decision will be out soon,” said Collector.
