It’s reading week! Pick up your books

Highlighting the message that reading will inspire free thinking and personality development, the Ernakulam District Administration will launch the Reading Week celebrations on Tuesday.

KOCHI: Highlighting the message that reading will inspire free thinking and personality development, the Ernakulam District Administration will launch the Reading Week celebrations on Tuesday.  As part of the reading week, a variety of programmes will be held in the district.The programmes will kick-off with the district-level inauguration at SNV Higher Secondary School, Paravur.  A rally will be organised in this connection.

Paravur Municipal chairman Ramesh D Kurup will inaugurate the rally. Grandhalokam editor and poet S Ramesan Nair will inaugurate the Readers Week. Library Council district president P R Reghu will preside over the inaugural meet. M R Surendran will deliver Panicker Memorial Lecture. Councillor T V Nidhin, District Information Officer Nijas Jewel, Paravur Taluk Library Council president C V Ajithkumar, Hari Vijayan, E G Santhakumari, P R Latha and K M Ashiq will also speak.

Various programmes to be held at the libraries include honouring writers, sharing reading experience, various competitions for students and book exhibitions. Those who are interested in participating can contact 9947264234.

District Education deputy director C A Santhosh said that P N Panicker Memorial Lecture will be organised at various schools in the district. The students will be introduced to new books every day on the assembly during the Reading Week. Books will be exhibited in school libraries.

Writers residing near schools will be invited as special guests and will interact with the students. Seminars which highlight the importance of reading will be organised. An essay writing competition for students on the importance of reading will also be conducted. The best essay will be given exciting prizes. The student who read the most number of books will also be given a special award. The public can also donate books to the libraries. The students will be provided with an opportunity to visit the public libraries near each school. A function will be organised at Aluva Taluk office on Tuesday. District Collector K Mohammed Y Safirulla will be the chief guest.
