Kolkatans in awe of first woman cabbie

Kolkatans are in awe of acid attack survivor and city’s first woman cabbie, Sucheta Sinha. Sinha suffered 43 per cent acid burns in an accident. After recovering, the 26-year-old mortgaged her jewellery to buy a car and registered it with Uber. Sucheta now owns seven vehicles, of which she drives one. She has become the inspiration in a city which boasts of women worship and empowerment, but which also witnesses dowry burnings and acid attacks on a regular basis. Frustrated with large-scale unemployment, young Kolkatans are looking up to the meeting of chief minister Mamata Banerjee with business magnate Mukhesh Ambani at his Mumbai residence Antilla. The new avatar of the stadium has gone down so well with the city dwellers that the evicted hawkers and illegal slum dwellers hardly got any support from the city residents — who are known to be sympathetic to the plight of people who seem to have been wronged for capitalistic designs.

Not happy with shorter Poush Mela

With the shortening of annual Poush Mela in Rabindranath Tagore’s abode of peace Shantikinetan, many Kolkatans are considering other options for their Christmas holidays. Beach destinations in southwestern West Bengal including Tajpur, Udaipur and Mandarmani, top the list in the options of many Kolkatans who fear that a shorter Poush Mela might result in lesser number of baul participants and lesser extravaganza.
