MUMBAI: In a freak accident in the Chembur area of Mumbai in Maharashtra, a 57-year-old morning walker was crushed to death when a coconut tree fell on her.

Kanchan Nath, a yoga teacher and an ex-anchor with a news channel, clad in a blue sweatshirt, was on her morning her walk near the Sushrut Hospital in Chembur on Friday morning, when a coconut tree on the side of the road fell on her. Bystanders rushed to her following the incident and according to news websites, she was then taken to a local hospital.

Her husband Rajat Nath said that the housing society had moved an application with the BMC officials on July 17 to cut the tree saying that it might fall anytime. However, they inspected the tree on Thursday and said that there was no need to cut it down.

Environmentalists have blamed faulty construction of footpaths and roads for falling trees. The base of the trees is choked with concrete leaving no space to grow. This results in weakening of the tree at the base, they said.
