Crime Rate: Kerala among top 5 States

While the national average of IPC crimes is 175.1, the corresponding rate in the state is 319.1 during the year 2007.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala has found a place among the top five states with regard to the average rate of crimes registered in the State during the year 2007.While the national average of IPC crimes is 175.1, the corresponding rate in the state is 319.1. In the case of violent crimes, the national average is 19 whereas the state average stood at 31, according to the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau.

There were total of 10,558 violent crimes in the state, which includes 7358 cases of riots.  As many as 367 persons were murdered in the state during the year, besides 402 attempts to commit murder. While there were 512 cases of rape the number of cases of kidnap and abduction was 255. With regard to the average of violent crimes, Manipur, Daman and Diu, Dadra Nagar Haveli and Assam are ahead of Kerala. In case of other crimes, Pondicherry, Chandigarh and Delhi stands ahead of Kerala.

When considering the total number of crimes, Kerala is in the 7th position. Those leading the table are UP (26,693), Bihar (23,039), Maharashtra (20,771), MP (15,280) and West Bengal (12,851). Despite reports of Cyber Crimes increasing in the states, the report says that only 12 cases of Cyber Crimes were registered in the state during 2006 and 2007. The number of Cyber Crime cases registered in the country during the two years was 135. Maharashtra and Karnataka tops the list with 35 and 27 respectively. Kerala is in the fourth place.
