Tourism possibilities of the lighthouse at Vizhinjam (also popular as the Kovalam light house) are set to be enhanced with the Directorate-General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL) planning to set up a museum and other amenities to attract visitors.
Minister of State for Shipping Milind Deora and Minister of State for HRD Shashi Tharoor released the logo of the light house on Sunday.
Deora said that his ministry was considering a proposal to set up a museum and an amphitheatre ‘exhibiting the art and culture of Kerala’.
“The plot surrounding the light house will be landscaped,” he said.
The DGLL has identified 15 lighthouses for the development of tourism and the one at Chennai was opened to visitors in November. Tourism-related works are progressing at the lighthouses at Mahabalipuram and Kanhoji Angre. The Vizhinjam project was delayed for over two years as the cabinet had banned transfer of the land without cabinet approval.
DGLL maintains 186 lighthouses, 23 Differential Global Positioning Stations, 64 Racons, wreck marking buoys and two deepwater channels.
