The city’s fourth prepaid autorickshaw stand is all set to be opened near the Pettah railway station in a couple of days. After the success of the latest prepaid auto stand near Thampanoor KSRTC bus stand, the City Traffic Police, along with City Corporation, will start a similar facility here.
The prepaid counter, coming up near the Pettah railway station, is mainly aimed at providing autorickshaw services at fair rates to visitors and travellers getting down at Pettah to travel to various areas in the city.
The trial run of autos for fixing the fares to various destinations from Pettah was held jointly by the representatives of auto drivers’ union and Traffic Police. “We will be able to fix the rates to different destinations after the Traffic Advisory Committee meeting. This rates will be later fed into the software for issuing tokens from the prepaid counter,’’ said Control Room Assistant Commissioner Bijoy P.
The City Corporation will be providing the basic infrastructure, including the computer and the salary of the traffic personnel on duty inside the counter. The operation of the counter will be jointly monitored by the civic body and the Traffic Police. The Traffic Police will also be preparing a list of auto drivers who will ply from the stand.
More than 25 autos could be parked at a time at the auto stand where the prepaid counter is coming up. “After discussing the fares in the Traffic Advisory Committee meeting, we will be able to make the counter function in a smooth manner,’’ said Bijoy.
The number of prepaid counters in the city has now reached four and the only place left is General Hospital Junction as per the plans of Corporation and the Traffic Police. Meanwhile, a project to provide identity cards to auto drivers in the city is also under consideration. The ID card project will ensure better safety, both for the passengers and auto drivers.
