Doctors planning initiative against noise pollution

It is not just the environmentalists who are fighting pollution. The Association of Otolaryngologists of India (ENT and Head and Neck), in collaboration with IMA Trivandrum, is launching a unique initiative against noise pollution in the state called ‘Noise-Free Keralam.’

 This is in connection with the 12th annual convention of the Association (KENTCON 2013) to he held from September 27 to 29 in the city and at Kovalam. The highlight of the conference is live surgery workshops mainly on head and neck cancer surgery.

 The conference will be attended by internationally eminent doctors, including endoscopic thyroid surgeon Dr Ngoc Lluong from Vietnam and well-known Otologist and cochlear implant surgeon Dr Gunesh Rajan from Perth, Australia.

 Dr Ngoc Lluong from Vietnam will deliver a keynote address on ‘endoscopic thyroidectomy’ on September 28 and Dr Gunesh Rajan will speak on ‘Hearing preservation in cochlear implantation’ on the same day. In the post-lunch session, Dr Ullas Raghavan from the United Kingdom will give a lecture on facial flaps, Dr Dwaraknath Reddy from Hyderabad will deliver a talk on ‘The art of publishing papers’  and Dr Vinod B Nair will speak on ‘Stress Management for Surgeons.’

 As part of the conference, the career guidance session for post-graduates and junior surgeons will have talks on the following topics - training abroad, otology fellowship programme, rhinology fellowship programme, laryngology fellowship programme, publishing papers and presenting topics.

  On September 29, there will be a symposium on tips and pearls in the management of chronic sinusitis, which will be moderated by Dr Vinod Felix, Dr Gireesh Raj, Dr Shibu George and Dr Vivek Saseendran. The Dr N Balakrishna Pillai memorial oration will be delivered by Dr Nupur Kapoor Nerurkar from Mumbai on the topic ‘Applications of laser in endoscopic laryngeal surgery.’

 As part of live surgery demonstration, the cases that are proposed to be demonstrated include hemithyroidectomy, endoscopic thyroidectomy, superficial parotidectomy, total laryngectomy, neck dissection, sleep endoscopy, stapedectomy, tympanoplasty, FESS, endoscopic skull base surgery, endoscopic CO2 laser cordectomy and type1 Thyroplasty/ Kashima’s Operation.

 The operating faculty include Dr Sreejayan, Dr Ngoc Lluong, Dr Mohan Kameswaran, Dr Bipin T Varghese, Dr Paul Sebastian, Dr Vikas Agarwal, Dr M P Manoj, Dr G V S Rao, Dr Meghanadh, Dr Janakiram, Dr Elizabeth Iype and Dr Jayakumar R Menon.
