Mamangam Turns One

Mamangam, the Kochi-based dance school started by actor Rima Kallingal, will celebrate its first year with a two-day dancefestival titled

‘Mulapoo Mamangam’ on Saturday. The celebrations will be inaugurated by entrepreneur Beena Kannan at Mamangam School of Dance at Kaloor.

The festival will be a celebration of artists not just in dance but also in various other creative expressions like jewellery, design, clothing and craft. The fest will also be a major art event that features Latin,Western and contemporary dance forms. Mulapoo Mamangam will begin with an art festfeaturing four women entrepreneurs who have found their own ways of expressing through clothing and jewellery.

They are  Karmasutra by Divya Thomas,Anneha   by Ann Joseph and  the Kudumbasree units, Artery by Minu Maria and Uzielle by Serin George. Besides, there will also be performances  by two reputed dance companies from South India. Salsa  Madras from Chennai will present Latin and Afro-Latin dance forms - Salsa, Kizombo and Bachata. Hip Hop Co from Bangalore  will present a Hip Hop repertoire. The highlight of the festival, apart from the featured artists, is an exclusive  curtain raiser of the dance production titled

Aarcha by Rima Kallingal and Mamangam’s performing wing.

Mamangam students will be performing in their respective disciplines of dance and martial arts that includes kuchipudi, bharatanatyam, kalari, contemporary and Hip hop.

Mamangam will also host two workshops. A dance and craft workshop for children with autism and a Hip Hop workshop by Hip Hop Co for the public.  The entryfor art fair and  hiphop workshop is freefor all.As part of the celebrations, Mamangam is launching its annual campaign LetsStartMoving.The  campaign was flagged off on August 17 at Chinmaya Vidyalaya,Vaduthala. This campaign aims to bring to people a‘ Zumbaand movement ‘interactive workshop.

On Saturday,there willl be a session at Mamangam. The first phase of  LetsStartMoving includes four schools and  IT Park inKochi.P. Rajeev MP,Hibi Eden MLA, Mayor Tony Chammany and GCDA chairmanNVenugopal will also be present.
