Extortion of Money from Traders: Two Held

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kazhakootam police on Wednesday arrested two anti-socials who were involved with extorting money from the traders and locals and threatening to kill them for money. The accused persons were identified as Harikumar,32, a Chanthavila resident and Arun, 29, a resident of Kulathoor.

According to police, Harikumar is the brother of a notorious goon and murder convict Venukuttan. The two were engaged in anti-social activities at Kazhakuttam and Kulathoor area for quite sometime. According to the police, the incident had put the residents and traders of Kazhakuttam junction in shock.

The two went on a threatening spree in several shops at Kazhakuuutam on Tuesday night seeking money. If any person refused to pay them, the accused manhandled them.

On Tuesday night, the accused roughed up a mobile shop owner who refused to pay ‘haftha’ and threatened a journalist who came for the purchase. Two more persons, Vishnu and Ananthu are still at large.

“ We also seized swords and iron rods from their custody. These individuals threaten the traders under the influence of alcohol and drugs. They fled from the scene when the traders decided to retaliate their threat. The accused returned later with weapons.

However, the police arrived at the spot and caught the duo red-handed after a scuffle broke out at the junction.The accused were produced before the magistrate and remanded in the judicial custody, the police said.

Housewife Forced to Give Money

The Thumba police on Tuesday arrested a 40-year-old man for extorting money from a housewife. The accused person has been identified as Jayakumar, a resident of Attipra.

According to police, the incident occurred on Monday when two anti-socials arrived at the residence of an Infosys employee at Kulathoor. The accused barged into the residence and threatened the housewife and brother of the house owner. The accused had gone absconding since the police began a search.

 He was nabbed from a shed near a temple at Nalanchira. One more person is still at large and we are intensively following up on the case, the police said . The accused has been produced before the magistrate and remanded in the judicial custody.
