There is a lot more to table lamps than just being a source of illumination. They are also perfect decorative props, ones that can  spice up your home. Well, not many would disagree with this once you see the lamps designed by Lakshmi Menon, a homemaker-turned-entrepreneur.  Her table lamps -- brought under the label, 'Diya Designs' -- made of terracotta  and metal are contemporary, but with an ethnic feel.

Says Lakshmi: "The concept of table lamps as a light source does not exist anymore. Lamps, the ideal ones, are decorative pieces, too.  They can light up your home and break the monotony." Besides, the usual table lamps, 'Diya Designs', which has a showroom at Elamkulam, Kochi, also brings out hand-crafted wall-lights and furniture-mounted lamps.

The highlight of her collection, however, is terracotta lamps that come in intricate designs, colours and shapes. The slender and stylish ones resemble wooden lamps in look, but are only better.

"People do ask me how terracotta would survive in homes. But, if they aren't  handled roughly, terracotta lamps can outlive us," says Lakshmi.

Her terracotta lamps, custom-made, as per the demands of the customer, have also found a niche in the market.

"These days people demand lamps that go well with the home decor. Our lamps come in neon colours and slender designs. The advantage of terracotta lamps is its colour palette and how it alters the overall look of our home. For instance, a room that has been  done in white could do well with a small dash of colour and that is what terracotta lamps can provide. It can break the monotony of your theme and be a pleasant prop," says Lakshmi, who adds that most people prefer small ones. She gets the lamps made from a pottery unit at Urakkam in Thrissur. "Their workmanship is unparalleled," she says.

Then, there are metal lamps made of oxidised copper and wrought iron. The designs are inspired by everything, from Warli art to African Masai art.

Lakshmi also does a bit of styling up of your old lamps. She says one can  always go for newer lamp shades made of raw silk, cotton, and hakoba to give lamps a makeover.

The prices depend on the size, but designs are available from Rs 2,000 onwards. Contact: 9995294153.
