THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Now on, travellers have another reason to visit the Neyyar Dam Aquarium. The centre has opened a seed counter where you can buy ornamental fish varieties for your home aquarium.

The seeds, reared by professionals in ideal conditions, are of high quality and are available at low prices. The species available are Goldfish, Angelfish, Koi Carp, Guppy, Molly, Platy and Swordtail.
Started in 2012, the aquarium with state of the art modern display mechanism, is attracting travellers in hordes. It is situated adjacent to the famed Neyyar wildlife sanctuary.

The daily average of 250 visitors will swell to thousands on weekends and festival days. The revenue during Onam Week celebrations crossed Rs four lakh, says aquarium manager Thulasi Kumari S.
The aquarium building is constructed in the shape of a pentagon. A circular pond around the building and forest like premises make it a children’s attraction.

Over 70 species of indigenous and exotic fresh water ornamental varieties are displayed on the two floors of the centre. They include different types of cichlids, gouramis, sharks, barbs, tetras, catfishes, oscars etc. Besides tanks of different types, including a cylindrical 360 degree aquarium and an overhead aquarium, fishes are also kept in the pond.

Wall paintings, water fountains, 3D models are other attractions. A host of development plans for the aquarium are on cards, says Thulasi Kumari.
“Our immediate priority is expansion of the breeding unit to rear more varieties. High quality and low prices have increased the demand for our seeds. The expansion will take place in six months,” she said.
Another plan is to launch a 3D theatre within a year. The aquarium owned by the state fisheries department is operated by the Agency for Development of Aquaculture, Kerala (ADAK). ADAK also operates an aquarium-cum-training and awareness centre at Thiruvambadi in Varkala. For enquiry and advance booking:0471-2271099
