When heritage meets tourism at Madavoorpara rock temple

The protected rock temple at Kattayikonam was thrown open to visitors on Thursday after completion of the first stage restoration work.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opening of the heritage monument of Madavoorpara which falls within the Corporation limit gives an additional weekend getaway for public. Located 18 kilometres away from Thiruvananthapuram, the protected rock temple amidst greenery around, is in Kattayikonam. It was thrown open to visitors on Thursday after completion of the first stage restoration work. The area has been developed as a tourist spot. It includes a children’s park, a hut for children to relax and have food, three smaller huts, heritage walkway, garden, fountain, ticket counter, three toilets each for men and women, and a bamboo bridge.

 Inaugurating the ceremony, Archaeology Minister Kadannapally  Ramachandran said  such heritage spots would help younger  generation learn culture and tradition. He said the second stage  restoration would be undertaken soon and  would include the  development of a watch tower, shelter, and aquarium.

 Power and Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran, who  presided over the function, said the heritage site would be  developed into a  major tourist attraction.
