THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:The reason for the present water crisis is the destruction of nature in the name of development, said environmentalist and poet Sugathakumari. She was speaking at a river conservation project called ‘Ammayam Neyyar’ organised by Gandhi Harithasamrudhi.
“Today people are running helter-skelter for water. While forests are being destroyed and rivers polluted. We are suffering due to this. For survival we need environment friendly development,” said Sugathakumari.
The chairman of Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi, P Gopinathan Nair administered a pledge to protect nature.
Proper management of purambokku land of Neyyar, stopping polluted water from draining into the river, control river sand mining etc were the main preventive measures suggested during the meeting.
