No ban on trekking: Forest Minister K Raju

In the wake of reports that women were prevented from trekking to Agasthyakoodam, Forest Minister K Raju on Thursday said there is no such ban.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In the wake of reports that women were prevented from trekking to Agasthyakoodam, Forest Minister K Raju on Thursday said there is no such ban. He said his department had only pointed out the practical difficulties in trekking through the dense forest.

Three days and two nights are needed to reach Agasthyakoodam situated in the Peppara Range.
As the path is frequented by wild animals and is an elephant path, there is much risk, he said. Several security measures have to be taken when women also trek along the path. ‘’Only a warning was issued taking into account these issues,’’ he said.

There is need for more resting places and toilet facilities, which can be constructed only with the Centre’s approval. The Minister has given instructions to remove all persons who retired from service and now working on temporary basis in the department. The decision was taken in the wake of  many youth waiting for employment.
