Mirroring the angst about daughters

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In today’s world, every parent having a girl child cannot remain calm and composed if she is away from home. The fear of her inviting the evil eye is not uncommon among the parents and that nightmare becomes the plot of the children’s film ‘Unarvu’ which had its premiere before a special gathering of Indian audience at East Ham, London, the other day.

The nightmare of the average Indian parents  these days stirred the mind of Balasankar Mannath, who had already made 24 documentary and short films to make the children’s film under the banner Mannath films.
Karamban, an aged man taking care of a paddy field, and his wife Karambi, after spending a few days in their native place return to their hut near the paddy field. This time, a little girl Thevi also accompanies them.

Fascinated by the butterflies, flowers, plants and animals, she decides to stay with them and loves to indulge in the pristine beauty of nature. She enjoys the company of the local children. She also makes friendship with a particular tree near their hut. She often talks and shares her experience with this friend.

Meanwhile, she makes friendship with Pattu, a shop keeper and friend of Karamban. But Pattu had already cast an evil eye on her without her notice.

As the worst fears come true, one day, Thevy disappears and Karamban searches for the girl in vain.
“Thevi could be Karamaban’s daughter. Every parent who has a daughter will have such nightmares. Also, Thevi’s love for butterflies, flowers and trees is my dream that the new generation would learn to love nature,“ says Balasankar.

He has also done the story, script and  camera for the film which has K Kaladharan, Sreekala Suresh, Santhosh Souparnika, M S Harikumar and Joy Purayidathil playing the main roles. The other artists include Bhadra Krishna, Sanu, Nikita Nair, Abhiram, Abhirami, Guruvanditha and Arjun Ashok. Lyrics are by Poovachal Khader. Sachin Shankor Mannathu has rendered the music for the film.
