Community policing can do wonders in curbing extremism: Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan has said community policing could do wonders in checking fundamentalism. Inaugurating the concluding session of the national meet on community policing on Friday, he said even 2,300 years ago Chanakya’s Arthasasthra had mentioned about community policing.
Chanakya had emphasised the need for communication between people, merchants and students.
“Democracy should target all round development. But in a progressive democracy following archaic police style would not help. Society and police should have meaningful engagement and community policing could help democratise the police by replacing its old style,” he said.
The Speaker said the Janamaithri Suraksha scheme has improved road safety, helped fight against drugs and women safety.
Pointing out that youths and students were vulnerable to antisocial activities, he said there were technocrats who had been part of extremist ideologies. The community policing could check the fundamentalism and extremism, he said.
A Sampath MP presided over the function. Mediapersons Praveen Swami, Conflict Management Institute director Ajay Shani were present. South zone ADGP B Sandhya welcomed the gathering and DIG Shefeen Ahammed K proposed a vote of thanks.
In the two-day seminar, experts from various states, top police officials, academic scholars, social scientists, researchers, voluntary organisation workers and mediapersons attended various sessions.
